Great question. The short answer: VISION.
As MISSION moves closer to becoming an "irresistible church for our next door neighbors and the next generation," we are taking a close look at all of our environments. We want to make sure each environment we are creating is irresistible for people of all ages. When it comes to Saturday night services, it has become more difficult to create irresistible environments in our kids, student and main environments due to decreased attendance.
Our adult, kids and youth programming requires a certain "critical mass" in order for us to be effective in creating the right type of environment for people to grow. We have discovered that our Sunday services have been more effective in attracting and retaining new guests and families with identical programming to Saturday services.
In addition, there is a financial cost savings that comes with reducing the number of services we create each weekend to a more appropriate number for the size of our church.
The Leadership Team and Board of Servant Leaders began praying for wisdom and discussing towards the end of 2015 as the attendance at Saturday night services began to decrease. Initially, the discussions centered around logistics of what a service time change would mean for MISSION during this season. Data was then gathered related to attendance patterns, cost, survey feedback and service times of other area churches. This data was used to help move the discussion further along. Once the Leadership Team and Board had solid understanding of the change, they brought the discussion to a larger group of staff and committed attendees. The feedback gathered at these meetings confirmed the necessity for changing the service times and helped guide the implementation plan moving forward.
As MISSION grows, we will make plans to accommodate larger crowds. Some discussion has already begun around the most optimal times for additional services. Nothing has been decided yet and we are entertaining multiple options.
This idea was considered. There are two reasons we decided not to proceed in that direction:
- This works, in theory, for a time. In the long run, it is difficult to retain and sustain strong volunteer teams when they are not able to attend a service on the same day they are serving.
- Additionally, our desire is to create the opportunity for everyone to "attend one and serve one." A standalone service is counter-productive to that value.
MISSION Kids will offer programming for kids from infant to 6th grade at all service times.
As of right now, the ANTHEM Weekends (youth) Sunday service times are not changing. The JHM (7-8th grade) will still meet at 9a on Sunday and the HSM (9-12th grade) will still meet at 1030a on Sunday.
The Staff and Leadership Team are prepared to add programming for youth, if necessary.
YES. For us to continue to create irresistible environments for everyone, we need you. Talk to your team leader about the Sunday service time that best works for you to serve.
Any time a church goes through a transition the way MISSION has over the last few years, significant turnover is to be expected. With a new vision and changes in both leadership and programming, people who once called MISSION home have moved on. That is completely normal and can often be healthy for both them and the church.
In the last year, we are seeing more unchurched people and new families visit and find a home at MISSION on Sundays. The same has not been true on Saturdays.
